School Council elections are almost upon us and to reflect this year's renewed focus on 'pupil voice' we are introducing some big changes to the way the council is elected and runs. The elections will take place on Tuesday 22nd October with the results being announced in a special assembly the following day.
The first change to the election process will see children giving presentations to their classmates to explain why they are the best person to represent the class at council. They will need to demonstrate they have the key skills of a class representitive and be willing to answer questions from their audience. If children wish to stand for the council they have been set this presentation as homework with a deadline given by their class teacher.
The presentation can be any format the child wishes and we would ask parents to give their children any help they can (even if it's just to listen to them practice). As the council will involve children from Reception - Year 6, the content of the presentation will be very age specific and could simply be two or three reasons why that child would make a good representitive. I have sent home information that highlights the skills required to be a good councillor and this would be an excellent starting point.
Once the presentations have been given and the council voted in, here are some of the other changes to the set up of the school council:
- Roles will be given within the council - Chairperson, Vice-Chairperson, Treasurer, Secretary etc.
- Meetings will by hosted by Mr Worth on a monthly basis.
- School council will attend some Governor and WLFTFA Meetings to feedback and give their opinions.
- The council will be given a budget to spend and will be responsible for touring new children/parents around the school.
- Reception representitives will attend to become accustomed to the set up and build up to full participation in Year 1.
- The school council will have a guided tour of the Sennedd and learn about how the Welsh Government works.
We look forward to getting the new School Council up and running and wish all interested children the very best of luck in their campaigns!
