Read Write Inc.

The teaching of reading has always been a vital part of the curriculum at Ffynnon Taf Primary School. In recent years there has been a push towards the teaching of synthetic phonics (teaching the sounds of letters and combining them to form words) as research has shown that children’s reading and writing improves significantly if they have a sound knowledge of phonics.

In order to provide the best possible opportunities for your child’s early education, our School has adopted the Read Write Inc. programme to aid our teaching of reading throughout the school.

All teachers and support staff have undergone substantial training in order to best deliver the programme and will receive regular support to ensure consistently high standards in every classroom.

All children (Years 1 – 6 , Reception stay as a class) have been assessed and placed in groups that most appropriately suit their reading needs. As Read Write Inc. Managers, Mrs Pontin and I have the role of ensuring that children are regularly assessed and move through the groups as quickly as possible. It will be normal for children to change their groups as regularly as every half term. Once the children have completed the programme successfully they will be placed into an ‘off scheme’ group for more traditional English lessons. The whole aim of being on the programme is to be off as soon as possible. Children that are ‘off scheme’ will be more than able to cope with the reading and writing demands of the Key Stage 2 (junior) curriculum.

As RWI is new to our school, we are having an implementation period of 6 weeks. Children have been put into groups and will undergo intensive but fun phonics training during English lessons on a Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. On a Thursday and Friday they will return to their usual classes for Big Writing preparations. Just before half term, all children will be re-assessed and placed into more accurate groups or be removed from the programme if ready.

We will be having an open evening for RWI after half term where you will have the opportunity to learn how you can help your children at home or ask any questions. There is also a website available www.oxfordowl.co.uk designed for parents of children learning phonics. In the meantime, I have attached some further parental information but should you wish to discuss the programme or how it affects your child, please do not hesitate to contact me in school.
