Following the devastating
news from Manchester earlier this week, we held a special assembly today in an
attempt to reassure the children and help stop rumours and stories circulating
on the playground. We used the Newsround
video (link below for your information) to gently explain what has happened and
to reassure the children that while this is terribly sad and extremely scary,
it is also very rare. The focus was not on the act itself, the perpetrator or
his motives, but on the kindness shown afterwards and the efforts of all those
that helped and cared for those in need. In short the aim was to encourage
hope, love and strength rather than fear and hatred.
It is always difficult to
talk about such events with children of primary school age but staff were on
hand to answer questions openly and sensitively following the assembly. The Newsround video and website (which gives
some very good guidance to parents and pupils) can be found on our twitter page
or at:
We have told the children
to do things that make them happy and spend as much time as possible with the
people they love. With this in mind, and more so than ever this week, we hope
you have a wonderful half term holiday filled with quality family time and lots
of memory making!
