Last week we celebrated St David's Day with a host of fun activities and events. The morning of the day itself was spent creating art and craft work in each class in preparation for the afternoon's annual Eisteddfod. Dosbarth Teigr and Eliffant created their own works of art inspired by Louise Clough while Cangarw and Coala concentrated on the charcoal inspired works of Valerie Ganz.
In the Juniors, Dosbarth Twcan designed tourist posters for Wales with a special Doctor Who twist, Llew researched Welsh sports stars and Rhino Gwyn looked at Welsh musical superstars.
During the afternoon, we held the actual Eisteddfod. We found out who had won the art and craft competitions (winners pictured below) and each class entertained the rest of the school with a song, poem, dance or drama inspired by Wales. Dosbarth Teigr and Eliffant gave a cheery performance of Aderyn Melyn while Coala and Cangarw beautifully sang Ar Lan y Mor and performed an energetic Twnpath.
Following the break, Twcan performed a self written Welsh language Doctor Who sketch; Llew delivered a hugely entertaining version of a Max Boyce classic and Rhino Gwyn raised the roof by leading a Karaoke version of Tom Jones' It's Not Unusual. In addition the whole school sang Sospan Fach, Mr Haul and a rousing rendidition of the National Anthem to close.
Following Wednesday's celebration, children focused on their poetry writing for the second half of the week. Part two of our Eisteddfod was held on Monday morning after the poetry had been judged and the winners from each class were announced. This year's theme was '10 things found in .... pocket' with each class focusing on a different character or celebrity. Welsh sports stars, musicians, traditional tale characters and of course, Doctor Who, were all featured and the standard of poems was exceptional! After our infant winners were revealed, this year's Mini Bard was announced as Isla Bailey. Following the junior results, we discovered this year's overall bard, and winner of the Ffynnon Taf chair was Leila Deren with her fantastic tribute to Dame Shirley Bassey. Check out the winners and their poems in the pictures below...
