As you may recall, I wrote
to you in April regarding new Welsh Government National Tests in reading and
numeracy. These tests were based on a new National Literacy and Numeracy
Framework (LNF) which is being introduced on a statutory basis from September
2013.
The LNF identifies annual
literacy and numeracy expectations and is designed to help children develop
literacy and numeracy skills through all subjects not just their discreet
English and Mathematics lessons.
The test results have now
been sent back from the Welsh Government along with individual parent reports
for both reading and numeracy. I enclose your child’s reports with this letter.
While we are pleased overall with the standards achieved it is worth noting
that this is the first year of such testing and the test is based on a
curriculum that has not yet become statutory. We are treating this year’s
results as a starting point to build and improve on each year as the LNF becomes
embedded.
In future years, the
government will aim to release these results earlier so they can be included
with your child’s school report. Should you wish to discuss either the contents
of this letter or the test reports, please do not hesitate to contact me in
school.
