Uganda Day One - Arrival, Kampale & The Nile

After a long 8 hour flight from Heathrow, we finally arrived in Entebbe – Uganda’s only international airport. For this first part of the journey I have been travelling with a deputy from an RCT secondary school but we will be meeting a much larger group of teachers once we get to Mbale.

It is not safe to travel after dark in Uganda so we had to stay the first night in an airport hotel (nothing like our hotels in the UK and my first experience of mosquito nets full of holes and windows without glass!) before setting off on the long car journey to Mbale. The sights, sounds and smells on the journey were like nothing I have experienced before and I have never been to a warmer, happier or more colourful place. I have posted some photos of the journey but none of them truly capture what it’s like here.

After travelling through the busy, vibrant capital city of Kampala (where the driver was stopped by police for driving in the wrong lane!), we arrived at Jinja, famous for being the location of the source of the Nile. Following a HUGE fish lunch (head included), we took a boat trip on the Nile to view the source, Lake Victoria and the huge variety of wildlife that live on the shore. This was another fantastic experience and a good break before the final 4 hours to Mbale.

We finally arrived at our accommodation in Mbale and met the other teachers from Rhondda Cynon Taf for a meal. It was a great introduction to this fascinating country.
